McGee, and my life’s journey has been one of resilience, hope, and determination. From humble beginnings as a refugee child in Ghana to building a future in Liberia, and the world at large, my story reflects the strength of perseverance and the power of education and love. I was born in Ghana during a time of great uncertainty, as my family fled the Liberian Civil War. Raised by my single mother Christina C. Doely in a refugee camp, my childhood was marked by both hardship and hope. Despite the challenges of displacement, my mother instilled in me the values of courage, faith, and education. It was in the refugee camp that I began my primary education at the Refuge Baptist School as a refugee learning under difficult conditions but with a strong desire to succeed. Those early years shaped my resilience and gave me the foundation to pursue greater opportunities. After the Civil War ended, my mother and I returned to Liberia to reunite with our family. This was a turning point in my life, as I continued my primary and junior high education in my homeland at the Canterbury Episcopal High school located Maryland Center Barnersville Road where I completed my elementary education with flying colours as valedictorian with the help of God and my single mother. I started my junior high education in Brewerville where I lived with my aunt Felecia Doely Hinneh and her husband Mr. Samuel K. Hinneh while my mother went to the interior [Liberia’s remote rural regions] to support me. Victoriously, I completed and came out with flying colours as valedictorian again for the second time. A few years later, my mother returned to Monrovia to reunite with me again. I completed my senior high in Duazon at Liberia Renaissance Education Complex ( LREC) with another flying colours as first valedictorian of the school senior high. After my high school graduation I was still determined to pursue higher education, so I enrolled at the University of Liberia where I studied an Accounting Major and Economics minor. I graduated with a GPA of 3.0 as an honour student with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. Since my high school and university life, education has been my anchor, and I worked diligently to excel in every aspect of my life knowing that it was the pathway to a brighter future. At the University, I embraced academic challenges, expanded my knowledge, and prepared myself for a meaningful career. My time there was transformative, shaping both my professional and personal life. After high school, I began teaching at the elementary, junior high, and later senior high school levels, focusing on mathematics and English. During my college years, I interned with the Liberia Pure Honey and Coconut Oil Company, as well as with Catholic Relief Services (CRS), where I worked first in the Peace Building department before moving to the Finance department to further develop my career. Later that year, I completed my internship and was promoted to Service Provider in the Finance department. After two years of hard work and dedication, I was promoted again, this time to Finance Assistant. It was at the University of Liberia that I met my lifetime partner, Mr. Emmanuel Ryan Pyne, who has since become my greatest companion and supporter. Our relationship blossomed through shared values and dreams. He eventually engaged me and paid my dowry through a traditional ceremony that honoured our cultural heritage. This year, we have decided to celebrate our love once more with a European wedding, symbolizing not only our union but also our journey together across cultures and traditions. Right after our wedding ceremony we will be embarking on our educational journeys to pursue our master’s degrees together as a couple. My life story is a testament to resilience, love, and the pursuit of education. From a refugee camp in Ghana to the halls of the University of Liberia, I have learned that challenges can be stepping stones to success. Growing up in Duazon as the youngest of eight siblings, Jeremiah was raised by his single mother, Julia, who worked tirelessly to provide for her family. Despite the challenges, Julia believed in the promise of education and enrolled two of her eight children at LREC, making them among the school’s very first students. At LREC, Jeremiah quickly developed strong literacy skills and a passion for learning that laid the foundation for his future achievements. The school’s commitment to accessible, tuition-free education helped open new doors for him and many others in the community. Today, Jeremiah is pursuing tertiary studies in Leisure Tourism and Hospitality Management at the East African University Rwanda. He has embraced leadership as the Minister for International Student Affairs, serving and representing his peers from around the world. Jeremiah’s dream is to return to Liberia and contribute to the growth of the local tourism sector, helping to build a brighter future for his homeland.
