ANNUAL UPDATE 2022-23

HIGHLIGHTS FROM OUR SCHOOL YEAR

WHAT’S HAPPENED AT LREC THIS YEAR?

100% RENEWABLE ENERGY!

Thanks to the generous support of The DEAR Foundation Switzerland, our school has been able to cut ties with diesel generators, and complete the switch to solar-battery power for all our electricity needs! This transition will protect our environment, improve student health and safety, increase operational efficiency, and allow us to focus more of our resources on our educational programs in order to boost learning outcomes.

GIRLS’ CLUB ESTABLISHED

LREC senior-high girls came together, under the guidance of School Management Committee Member Margaret Suah, to form the LREC Loyalty Girls’ Club. The club will act as a peer-support network to help our female students navigate sensitive matters like self-esteem, personal hygiene, and career selection.

According to President Emeta of Grade 12, the club is intended to inspire her peers to have a voice, be decision makers, develop problem-solving skills, and create visionary change in their school and respective communities. We're proud to see our senior girls taking such a positive initiative, and grateful to our female teachers who have stepped up to provide support and guidance.

SCIENCE WING COMPLETED

Thanks to support from Her Excellency Madam Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, Margibi County Development Fund, Liberian Agency for Community Empowerment, the LREC Parent-Teacher Association, and a number of private donors, our science wing is now up and running! We’re still working towards full internal fit-out as science labs, as well as construction of further wings on the high school building, but in the interim the additional two rooms are serving as classrooms, and freeing up space for our Learning Resource Centre.

To all those who made this possible, thank you for creating a brighter future for Liberian youth.

LEARNING RESOURCE CENTRE SET UP

Just in time for the 2023-24 academic year, we’ve set up a new Learning Resource Centre to house our growing library, and serve as a quiet space for independent research and study, supported by Mr Sheriff as full-time Librarian.

COUNSELLING SERVICES INTRODUCED

We're now offering psycho-social counselling services to the students of LREC, thanks to Nurse Meko Tarwille undergoing additional training to upgrade her qualifications. Students can meet Nurse Meko directly, but parents can also make an appointment through the school office to discuss matters concerning their child's mental and emotional well-being.

LREC’S GOT TALENT

LREC hosted it’s first ever Got Talent event, with students from all levels showcasing their talents in music and dance! Congratulations to Khadija Diallo and duo Amelia Washington & Beauty Jackson, who took out the elementary and high school divisions respectively, winning scholarships to help them focus on nurturing their talent.

REINTRODUCED AGRICULTURE

This year we’ve reintroduced agriculture to the curriculum and set up a school garden where students can learn the best techniques for cultivating crops in Liberia. Food grown will feed back into our school meals program, with any excess to be sold at market to help support our educational programs.

PARENT-TEACHER ASSOCIATION PIGGERY

The PTA are well on their way to commencing pig-farming as a way to support their children’s education. Construction on a 5-stall pigpen is nearing completion, and should be up and running in 2023-24.

For the mind does not require filling like a bottle, but rather, like wood, it only requires kindling to create in it an impulse to think independently and an ardent desire for the truth.
