WHAT HAPPENED AT LREC THIS YEAR?

INTRODUCED CATERING & HOSPITALITY

Under the tutelage of Mrs Eloise Neblett, we started offering Catering & Hospitality as a vocational training elective to all high school students at LREC. This photo comes from their inaugural practical session, where they were learning how to make doughnuts - a popular street food in Liberia. Yum!

ALL FEMALE STUDENT COUNCIL LEADERSHIP

2023-24 welcomed our 7th Student Council Government. President Mariama Fofana of Grade 12 headed an all-female leadership team - the first in LREC history.

FISH FARM ESTABLISHED

This year we established and fish farm - our 25-acre campus adjacent to the Mesurado river is perfectly sited for this. This initiative will not only ensure a self-sufficient food source for our school meals program but also offer valuable hands-on experience in aquaculture for our students, create jobs in the local community, strengthen our educational programs, and enable us to continue our mission of empowering Liberian youth.

USAID INTERVIEW

We're grateful to have been invited to participate in a USAID partnership incubator interview with lead consultant Kou Belleh. Pictured here with Principal Elaine Cole and Vice Principal David Dokie, we would like to thank Ms Belleh for taking the time to visit the LREC campus to hear more about our work

PIGGERY EXPANSION

Thanks to a grant from the US Embassy in Liberia, we've expanded the school's pig farm. An additional 6 pens were built and stocked with breeding sows. Much like our fish farm, the goals are simple: provide food for school meals, enable practical training for our students, support the cost of educating students, and create jobs in the local community.

FAO VISIT

We were pleased to welcome representatives of the Food and Agriculture Organisation, who came to inspect and advise on the expansion of our fish farm. They were excited by what they saw, and provided a raft of useful tips for making the project a success.

GALA CELEBRATIONS

Every year we come together as a school to celebrate what it means to be a part of LREC. Students had the opportunity to participate in sports and academic competitions with nearby schools, showcase their rich Liberian heritage, and build confidence through speech and drama performances.

WELCOMED HARMIK BACK

We were pleased to welcome back former volunteer, Harmik Wilkho, who met with our leadership team to discuss progress at the school. This is Harmik’s third time in Liberia, and we’re grateful for his continued advice and support.

CLASS FIELD TRIPS

Our students have been out exporing the world around them, with field trips to Providence Island, Invincible Sports Park, ELBC Radio, the National Toiletry Company, China Mall, and PHP Park among their destinations.

THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

Our school couldn’t achieve all that it does for Liberian children without the help of supporters near and far. To everyone who has pitched in to make LREC a better resource for the community, we give our wholehearted thanks.

LREC School Piggery

US EMBASSY SELF-HELP FUND, PIGGERY

We’re extremely thankful to have been awarded a US Embassy Self-Help grant to expand pig-farming at LREC. Funds were used to construct and stock an additional 6 pens, and we’ve already welcomed multiple litters of piglets.

UNIVERSAL OUTREACH FOUNDATION, SCHOLARSHIPS

Thanks once again to the incredible team at Universal Outreach Foundation, Strive, and all their supporters who made 9 scholarships available for TVET students at LREC and 1 in our elementary division.

OMPRAKASH, GRANT

We were pleased to be accepted as an Omprakash partner, and awarded a US$1,000 strategic grant to focus and expand our work.

Much appreciation to Chloe Walker, who has been consulting with our management team to develop our 5-year strategic plan.

MINISTRY OF EDUCATION, TEXTBOOKS

Our appreciation to the Liberian Ministry of Education for the provision of textbooks for our Learning Resource Centre, where all of our students are able to access and borrow the resources they need to succeed in their studies.

COLLABORATING AGAINST POVERTY, FIRST AID TRAINING & KIT

Our school nurse, Meko Tarwille, and two of our high-school students participated in a first-aid training program and are now certified ‘First Aid Ambassadors’ in the school. The program was organized by Collaborating Against Poverty (CAP), a Liberian non-profit working to improve primary and emergency care throughout the country.

CHARLIE VATER & TEAM, RUBIKS CUBES

Thanks to Charlie Vater and his Lego League team for their donation of Rubik cubes and training videos to our STEM program!

EDIFY, SCHOOL LEADERSHIP TRAINING

Principal Cole and Vice Principal Dokie attended a 3-day School Administrator training organized by global non-profit, Edify, in conjunction with the University of San Diego. The training focused on building a culture of learning, setting a school development plan, conditions for learning health & wellness, and teacher recruitment, induction, and professional development.

NATIONAL TOILETRY CO, TOILET TISSUE

Much appreciation to the National Toiletry Company for supplying us with a month’s supply of toilet tissue during one of our school field trips to learn more about their operations!

We would like to express our gratitude to all the other organisations and individuals who donated to support operations and projects at LREC, including both those below, and others who have asked to remain anonymous. You know who you are, and we are thankful for your support.
